Arsa Kimball was married to John "Laughlin" in Champaign County, Ohio on September 26, 1824. They lived in Ohio, then apparently briefly in Illinois about 1841, and moved to Iowa about 1842.

Her husband, John, apparently died on a trip to the Oregon Territory in 1853. His burial place is unknown. In his will signed in May of 1852 eight children are named: sons George, Hiram and James, and daughters Nancy, Lucy, Sarah Ann, Alvira and Caroline.

Mt. Vernon Hawkeye, Friday, Oct 3, 1873, page 3, col. 5:
Mrs. Arsa McLaughlin died on the 30th of Sept. at the residence of her son, James McLaughlin and was buried in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery on Wednesday. The deceased was one of the early settlers in this part of the country and must have been some sixty nine or seventy years of age. She leaves a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her loss and cherish her memory.

From a biographical sketch of son James in The Biographical Record of Linn County, Iowa, 1901, page 217:

John McLaughlin was born in Ireland November 15, 1799, and on his emigration to America located first in the east, where he married, August 26, 1826[sic], to Miss Arsa Kimball, who was born in Vermont January 20, 1805. Soon after their marriage they removed to Illinois, and during the '30s [actually, about 1842] came to Linn county, Iowa, being among the pioneer settlers of this locality. Locating in Franklin township, the father entered the land on which our subject now resides, and made his home there until his death. He started overland for California, but became ill before reaching there and died in Oregon in 1849 [more like 1853], his remains being interred in that state. ...

They had nine children, namely:

(1) George, who married Cassie Morford and resided in La Fayette, Iowa; he died in the service of his country during the Civil war.

(2) Nancy is the wife of William Hunt of Redland, California.

(3) Lucy married Bert Sargent of Franklin township, Linn County, and both are now deceased.

(4) Hiram, deceased, first married Jane Carnahan, and after her death wedded Elizabeth Horn, and resided in Lincoln, Nebraska.

(5) Sarah married Joseph Carnahan, who died in the service during the Civil war, and she is now the wife of John Denaway, of Jasper county, Iowa.

(6) John died at the age of eight years.

(7) Elvira married Demott Rose, who died in Franklin township, Linn county, and later wedded a Mr. Schwatzel, of Kansas, where her death occurred, though her remains were brought back to Mt. Vernon for interment.

(8) Caroline is the wife of Scott Thomas, of Garnet, Kansas.

(9) James H., our subject, is the youngest of the family.
