Arthur L. Sibell, age 73, of Osakis, Minnesota passed away suddenly September 11, 1993 at his home.
Arthur Laverne Sibell was born on September 7, 1920 in Belle River to Jesse and Alma (Hedine) Sibell. He served his country during WWII in the Army as a medical technician with the 206th Hospital Ship complement. He sailed in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, receiving the American Theatre Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. On July 9, 1943, Art was united in marriage to Jueanette Hoffman at the Fort Snelling Chapel. after the war, Art returned and did some farming in Belle River for a time. He then worked as a blacksmith at a shop in West Union. Art then found work as a millwright for the Waldorf Paper Mill of St. Paul. He worked there for 15 years. The following 15 years were spent as owners of the Evergreen Resort on Lake Miltona. He also did some more blacksmith work in Carlos. Art was a county assessor for Douglas County for 22 years. He also worked with American Linens Company out of Alexandria. The Sibells bought their home in Osakis in 1976.
Just as Art believed in the importance of serving his country, he also applied the same standards to his own life, serving his church and community throughout his life. He was a member of the George Elliot VFW Post No. 7902, having proudly served as Post commander. He belonged to the Immaculate Conception Church and the Knights of Columbus, St. Michael's Council No. 3176, having been a Past Grand Knight. He was the custodian for the church and school for 7 years and was one of the organizers for the Annual Summer Festival for the church. Art was active with the Osakis Senior Citizens group and was also a member of the Little Sauk Legion. In addition to all his other commitments, he was on the committee for the U.S.S. Hospital Ship Thistle Reunion. His selfless giving of his time and talents were appreciate by all. Arts hobbies, when his busy schedule allowed, included fishing and golfing in the summer and playing cards and dancing during the winter. He enjoyed entertaining others with his accordion playing, often sharing his music with the seniors at the senior citizens center. Art was also the neighborhood handyman and snowblower for his retired and widowed friends and neighbors. Art was a kind and giving husband, father, grandpa, brother and friend who will be dearly missed by his family and community.
His is survived by his wife, Jen of Osakis; four children, Joyce and Ronald Watson of Glenwood, John and Bonnie Sibell of Minneapolis, Mary and Gregory Schmidt of Coon Rapids, and Juliane and Greg VanKempen of Alexandria; 15 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret Kallstrom of Carlos, Donna Meyers of Shoup, Idaho, Janice Finch of Kennewick, Washington; three brothers, Marlin Sibell of Monument, Colorado, Sheldon Sibell of Osakis, Gary Sibell of Strawberry, Arkansas, Stepmother, Lily Sibell. Art is preceded in death by his parents, one brother Gerald (Larry) Sibell and one granddaughter Jennifer Watson.
A Mass of Resurrection was held September 15 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis with Father Victor Kinzer, Father Joseph Fridgen and Father Fred Kampson officiating. Interment was at the Calvary Cemetery in Osakis with military honors provided by the VFW Post 7902. Active pallbearers were his grandsons, Todd and Eric Watson, Chris Sibell, Jesse VanKempen, Terry and Scott Schmidt, David and Mike Tischer. Honorary pallbearers were the Past Grand Knights of St. Michael's Council 3176, the Knights of Columbus members, the Osakis VFW Post 7902 members, the Past VFW Commanders, the Little Sauk Legion members, the VFW Auxiliary members and the Daughters of Isabella members. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis.
