Herbert Monroe Estes age 78 of Joelton, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2015. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Millard and Bessie Estes and brother Hubert Estes. Educated at Jordonia School and Cumberland High, he earned a GED in Honolulu, Hawaii, and then, upon returning to Nashville, carried a 3.25 GPA at Falls Business College, while working a full-time job. In the 1960s, he, a gifted athlete, was a member of the national championship bowling team, and later played company softball, as well as coaching tee-ball. From childhood onward, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, and also raised championship-line English Springer Spaniel bird dogs for many years. Herbert served as a corporal in the U.S. Army, earning the Syngman Rhee award for war service in Korea. After his stint in the Army, he attended Nashville Auto Diesel College, then worked for a time on the Iowa Pipeline. After marrying Patsy, who would be by his side for the next 55 years, he settled into a long career in sales, first at Thomas Specialty Company, then as an award-winning Chevrolet Legion of Leaders car salesman, in Ashland City. He also served a long tenure as the Plant Operations Manager at Nashville's Davis Cabinet Company, retiring in 1994. Post-retirement, he was employed part-time as a cross-country furniture delivery driver, TPAC security guard, and portrayed Santa Claus at stores and Christmas parties. Herbert and Patsy were longtime members of Fairview Baptist, and then, Joelton First Baptist, Churches. They celebrated their Emerald Wedding Anniversary in August of his last year. Survivors include his wife Patsy Chapman Estes; daughters Cathy (Jason T.) Sparks of East Nashville and Karen (Jay) Grissom of Joelton; grandchildren Robert T. Sparks of Nashville, TN, Dricka Sparks of Kansas City, MO, and Rodney Sparks of Hickory, NC; sisters, Charlene Nickelson, Joyce Randolph of Scottsboro; and brother, Steve (Sandi) Johnson. Active Pallbearers are Rodney Sparks, Tony Chapman, Ken Williams, Jay Grissom, Jason T. Sparks, and Robert T. Sparks. Honorary Pallbearers are nephews, cousins, and former co-workers. Visitation will take place at Anderson & Garrett Funeral Home from 2 until 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2015 and 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. funeral service on Monday, February 9, 2015 with Bro. David Royalty officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, TN. The family would like to thank Allen Hall, Chaplain-Bro. Don, Nell Crawford, Aurora Briggs, Tracy Paterson, family friend Louise Tucker, and all our Cumberland Manor and Guardian Hospice family for the loving kindness and tender care they bestowed on the Estes family over the past year.
