She attended the North Woods grade school and then graduated from Troy High School in 1934. She was active in basketball while at Troy High School. After her children started school she worked at Woolworth’s Five and Dime Store; at W.T. Grant Co., as a manager of the credit department; and at the Blue Swan Mills until her retirement. She loved her family and her home on North Keystone Avenue. She was a member of the Sayre United Methodist Church, Sayre.
Surviving are her husband of 16 years, Harry Steele; a son and daughter-in-law, Leo and Marjorie Bonney, Roanoke, VA; a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Robert Shepps, Waverly, NY; her granddaughters and their spouses. Sue and Kevin Ames and Gail and Bob Boydston, all of Indianapolis, IN, Deborah and Glen Campbell, Rochester, NY, and Lisa and Wallace Edwards, Mechanicsville, VA; her great-grandchildren, Heather, Jeremy and Sarah Ames, Jarod and Emily Edwards, and Ian Boydston; her sisters, Mildred Slingerland and Ellen Judson; a brother Edward Merritt; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her beloved first husband, Leo G. Bonney, in 1982 after 46 years of marriage: her sisters Benita Becker and Donna Patterson; and her brothers James Merritt, twins Miles and Merle Merritt, and Rexford Merritt.
Funeral services were held at the Lowery Funeral Home, Athens on July 10 with the Rev. James Donahoo, pastor of the Sayre Christian Church, officiating. Burial was in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens. Burial was in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens. Memorial donations may be made to the Dave Smith Run, in care of Joan Smith, 145 Chestnut St., Sayre, PA.
