Laverne lived in Rural Fisher County near Sylvester and Hitson. She attended School at Sylvester, Dowell, and Hitson. Then her family moved to Hamlin in Jones County where she lived and graduated from Hamlin High School

She then moved to Abilene to attend Scoggins Beauty College. After attaining her license she worked for several Beauty Shops, including Scoggins and in Fort Knox, Kentucky.

She was involved in a Sorority Club and other Social Clubs.

When her Daughter, Kim, started School she volunteered as a Teachers Aid providing the Great Books Program and also served as Assistant Liberian. She was also involved in the Parent Teachers Association serving as Vice-President.

She served as a tour guide for the Abilene Zoo
