Daniel L. Moreno, Jr., 74, of Midland, died Friday evening, Jan. 23, 2015 at his home. He was born July 18, 1940 in Pearsall, Texas, son of the late Daniel and Rosa (Travino) Moreno, Sr. Daniel was raised in Oil City and attended Shepard schools. He was a bantam weight boxer for nine years and a member of the Boy's Club. Daniel was employed as a pipefitter in the Local #85 Union for over 46 years, retiring in 1994. Upon retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and favorite cats, Cinnamon, Ginger and Butterfly. Daniel was an avid sports fan that enjoyed going to Emerson Park, Dow Diamond or attending races at Tri-City Motor Speedway with his wife Eleanor, or taking his grandsons fishing and having camp fires in the back yard. A member of Poseyville United Methodist Church, he is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor (Ware-Opperman) Moreno of Midland, whom he married May 5, 1983; his children, Michelle (Jim) Mercer of Lansing and Thomas Moreno of Cooks; step-daughter, Lori (Todd) McMullen of Midland; grandchildren, Samantha Troutt of Colleyville, Texas, Alexis Yonchewski, Danielle Moreno, Mathew (Megan) McMullen, Christopher (Anna O'Conner) McMullen; and great granddaughters, Brianna Dias and Lacey McMullen. Also surviving are sisters, Carmen (Bill Pretzer) Adams of Sanford, Rosie Scribner of Midland, Jenny (Richard) Elcoate of Charlotte; and brothers, Nick (Lou) Moreno of San Bernardino, Calif., Raymond (Shirley) Moreno of Bridgeport, Joe (Bea) Moreno of Albuquerque, N.M.; and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Susanne Rios; and nephews, Ray Rios and Domingo "Tiger" Rios, Jr. Funeral services for Daniel will take place 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015 from the Poseyville United Methodist Church, with The Rev. Rahim Shabazz officiating. Interment will follow in Poseyville Cemetery. Daniel's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 West Wheeler Street on Tuesday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until time of the service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider MidMichigan Home Care or the Poseyville United Methodist Church. -
