Martha was the third daughter of four and one of eleven children born to the union of Lorenzo Dow Benton and Catherine Mary Stuntz Benton. On St. Patrick's Day 1885 she married farmer, Abraham Lincoln Abbey in Forest City, Winnebago County, Iowa. Their union was blessed with five children, three daughters and two sons. Sadly, both her sons and one of her daughters predeceased her.
