He was born in Hubbard Woods, Illinois and lived in Savannah since 1972, moving there from Waukegan, Illinois.
He was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army serving during the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.
He had a European Theater medal with 4 Battle Stars. He retired from Johns Manville as a Maintenance Supervisor after 45 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the 3rd Armored Battalion Officers Club and was a charter member and past President of the Quarter Century Club at Johns Manville.
He was a Communicant of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Balmes of Savannah; sons Geoff and Robert Balmes, Atlanta, James Balmes, Oak Park, IL., Joseph F. Balmes, Houston, TX., daughters Phyllis Balmes, Savannah, Virginia McDonald, Canton, Ohio, Christina Wheeler, Ft. Worth, TX.; brothers Wilfred Balmes, N. Chicago, IL., James Balmes, Gurnee, IL., Richard Balmes, Waukegan, IL, Francis Balmes, Milledgeville, GA., Mark Balmes, Dunwoody, GA.; sisters, Theresa Crowley, Gurnee, IL., Mary Ann Grum, N. Chicago, IL., Agnes Walenter, Gurnee, IL.; 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 7PM on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Queen of Peace Church in North Chicago.
