Matthew Kelly “Papa” Hinshaw (SSgt., U.S. Army, Retired), 44, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., passed away Monday, Jan. 26, 2015, at his residence.

Matthew was born Aug. 9, 1970, to Philo and Elizabeth (Whaley) Hinshaw in Providence, R.I., although he always considered himself from South Carolina.

He honorably served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years and retired as a staff sergeant (E-6). During that time he worked as a mechanic on a variety of equipment and weaponry.

He was a ham radio enthusiast and an active member of the VFW Post 9972 of Sierra Vista and the VFW Riders. Matthew was very family oriented and will forever live in the hearts of his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Philo.

He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Susan Cheryl Hinshaw; three children, Matthew Corey Hinshaw, Katrina Nicole Phillips Howitt, and Erika Bennett; three grandchildren, Robert (Roe) Phillips, Sophia “Pia” Phillips, and Damien Parker Pyle (who is due in four weeks); mother, Elizabeth and stepfather Charles Ott; three sisters, Melinda “PJ” Bolton, Traci Haven, and Mikki Hancock; three half-brothers, Phillip, Johnathan, and Timothy Hinshaw; and many nieces and nephews.

A Christian non-denominational service of remembrance with military honors will be Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at 6 p.m. at the V.F.W. Post 9972 in Sierra Vista, with Chaplain Don Nelson officiating.

A memorial service will also be held in South Carolina at a later date.
