James was born on his father's farm near Cross Roads, York County, Pennsylvania. At one time, Cross Roads was part of Hopewell. "JAMES DUNCAN Born April 3, 1780, m. Martha Manifold, November 10, 1803, lived in York County, near the state line. The children of this marriage were: (1) ANDREW, (2)) JOSEPH, (3) George, (4) HENRY, (5) JAMES and (6) SMITH; by a second wife he had a son (7) WIILLIAM. Descendents of James Duncan are still living but we have nothing definite as to their history." from "The Duncan and Gibson Families" by Hugh Welch Duncan, 1905. Hugh was James' nephew.
