John Wilbert Green, 81, formerly of Lafayette, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, in Sarasota, FL. He was born Jan. 31, 1917, in Bicknell, IN, and was a graduate of Bicknell High School.

Mr. Green was in the Navy from 1944 to 1946, serving in the South Pacific. After his discharge, he attended William and Mary College, where he played basketball. He later graduated from Indiana State University and began his high school teaching career.

He retired from the Lafayette School Corp. in 1987 after a 37-year career of teaching and coaching. He was active in local politics and served on the Lafayette Area Plan Commission, the Police Merit Commission, and was an at-large city councilman.

In retirement, Mr. Green was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was an active member of Beneva Christian Church, and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Charlotte; two sons, Brent of Honolulu and Rick of Palatine, IL; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service and internment will be in Lafayette at a later date.
