Mattoon, IL – F. W. "Hezzy" Bariether, age 80, of Mattoon, IL, passed away at 2:01 p.m., Saturday, January 17, 2015, at his residence.
The funeral service in his honor will begin at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL, 61938, with Reverend Ken Hutchens officiating. Interment will follow in Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home. Masonic rites will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., by Wabash Lodge # 179.
Born April 1, 1934, in Mattoon, IL, Hezzy was the son of Oscar and Mary Jane (Russell) Bariether. He married Celia Anne Highland on January 11, 1953, in Mattoon, IL. She passed away February 17, 2012. Survivors include three children, Susan Warren of Mattoon, IL, Sara Coulson of Troy, IL, and Tom Bariether and special friend Jami McClelland of Mattoon, IL; four grandchildren, Allison Gaddis of Urbana, IL, Joe Warren and wife Kendra of rural Mattoon, IL, Jonthon Coulson of New York, NY, and Oliver Coulson of Caseyville, IL; and two great grandchildren, Taylor and Ashton Warren.
Mr. Bariether was the owner and operator of Oscar's Garage in Mattoon, IL and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mattoon, IL. Other memberships included 59 year and life member of Wabash Masonic Lodge #179 of Etna, IL, where he served as Master five times, honorary memberships with Mattoon Masonic Lodge #260 and Miles Hart Masonic Lodge #595 of Windsor, IL, member of the Valley of Danville Scottish Rite from which he received the Meritorious Service award in 1985, Ansar Shrine of Springfield, IL, Mattoon High 12 Club #89 and an original member of the Cornbelt Shrine Cycle Patrol. He also served the Grand Lodge of Illinois as Grand Representative to Brazil from 1991 thru 1995. He was a member and served as officer of the Elect Lady Chapter #40 Order of the Eastern Star, former member of the State Executive Committee of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls for the State of Illinois and past Rainbow Dad of the Year in Illinois. He was a member of the Order of DeMolay of Mattoon, IL, and served as State Officer of the Illinois DeMolay for which he received the Chevalier Award. He was also a participant in the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center M.E.T.S. program.
Hezzy cherished his family and especially enjoyed travelling to Florida with his wife, Celia. They had enjoyed trips to Sarasota, FL, together for more than 40 years.
Memorials in his honor may be made to the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center M.E.T.S. Program, the Sarah Bush Lincoln Cancer Center, or the First United Methodist Church.
