- Funeral service for Mr. Carl E. Lowman, 81, of Columbia will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Living Springs Lutheran Church. Officiating will be The Reverend A. Glenn Boland, The Reverend C. Stoxen and The Reverend Dr. Luther Lindberg. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens of Columbia with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Saturday evening at Shives Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers are Carl Jowers, Adam Woodruff, Lee Harmon, Garry Davis, Mike Davidson and Bobby Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be John Ducate, Irvin LeGrand, Ervin Byars, Jim Jaco, Erbie Parker and Norman Adams. Memorials may be made to Living Springs Lutheran Church, 4224 Hard Scrabble Road, Columbia, SC 29223.
Mr. Lowman died Thursday, March 17, 2005. He was born November 9, 1923, in Columbia, the son of the late Jesse W. and Eunice McDonald Lowman. Mr. Lowman was a graduate of Olympia High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, serving in the Pacific Theater and the Korean Conflict. He was active in many Civic affairs, including Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of North Columbia. Mr. Lowman retired after a lifelong career with Liberty Life Insurance Company where he served as agent, staff manager, district manager and Chairman of Liberty Life's Manager Advisory Committee. He taught Life underwriting courses, served as President of Columbia Life Underwriter Association, the SC Law and Legislative Committee and national committeeman. Mr. Lowman was a member of American Legion Post No. 6 in Columbia. A lifelong Lutheran, he taught Sunday School for over 30 years and served many times as Chairman of Congregational Council as well as President of the Central District of Lutheran Men in Mission. He was an honorary life member of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary and was a charter member of Living Springs Lutheran Church in northeast Columbia.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Dottie) Kersey Lowman; four sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney and Kathy of Oakton, VA., Larry and Cathy, Danny and Linda, David and Elizabeth of Columbia; six grandchildren and seven great-grandsons; three sisters, Louise Kelly, Nola Rinehart and Lavinia Shull, all of Columbia; and one brother, Morgan Lowman of Baltimore, MD. Mr. Lowman was predeceased by his brother, Charles W. Lowman and his sister, Beatrice Brown.
