Doña Catalina de Palacios y Salazar y Vosmediano was born on Tuesday,November 1,1565 in Esquivias in the province of Toledo. As fate would have it, she met the greatest writer the world has ever known-Don Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra- the author of El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de La Mancha. They were wed on Wednesday, December 12,1584. She was 19 years old and he was 37 years old. Unfortunately during much of the time they were married they lived apart partly because of the fact that Cervantes was traveling to find ways to support the family.

Esquivias and the family of Catalina have a great influence in the writing of the novel Don Quijote. Many members of Catalina's family did not approve of her marriage to Cervantes; especially her uncle Alonso Quijano. This is the probable reason why Cervantes named his main character Alonso Quijano (who later would become Don Quijote)as a satire to the uncle of Catalina. Ironically he was from a village in La Mancha.-The first sentence of the novel Don Quijote starts out : IN A PLACE IN LA MANCHA WHOSE NAME I DO NOT WISH TO RECALL...perhaps Cervantes wants to forget about his wife's uncle!

During their marriage the 18 year age difference between Miguel and Catalina began to show. Greatly influenced by her mother, Catalina started to insult Cervantes because he was not becoming a success with his literary productions especially in the field of Spanish drama. She compared him to Lope de Vega (1562-1635.) It is known that none of Catlina's relatives attended their wedding which was held on a cold Wednesday,December 12,1584 Catalina's uncle -Juan de Palacios was the padre who married the couple.

Cervantes died on April 22,1616 in Madrid and one year later his last work, Los Trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda was published with Catalina receiving the royalties.

Doña Catalina died on Friday, October 30,1626 at the age of 60 just two days before her 61st birthday. ( It is said that Doña Catalina had blonde hair and grey eyes.)

She is buried beside her husband in Madrid. On Tuesday,March 17,2015 both her and her husband's remains were discovered- just in time to celebrate the 400th anniversary of her husband's death which will take place on April 22, 2016.On Thursday,June 11,2015 there was a formal ceremony reburying the remains of Doña Catalina and her famous husband. Mayor Botella of Madrid was on hand to honor the world's greatest writer and his beautiful wife Doña Catalina.
