SALMON. Calista Frances (Banwarth) Salmon, R.N., 86, of Arbutus Street, Middletown, wife of the late Thomas Gordon Salmon, died Thursday (Sept. 28) at Wadsworth Glen Health Care Center. She was born in Elizabeth, Ill., daughter of the late Charles and Catharine (Stephen) Banwarth, and was a former resident of Cromwell and Hudson View Gardens, N.Y.
Mrs. Salmon, who had an A.B. degree in Science from Clarke College, completed her R.N. at the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing, Baltimore, Md., and taught chemistry there after her graduation. She studied at the Florence Nightingale International Foundation, London, England, where she became the Executive Director of the International Council of Nurses in 1938. During World War II, the office was transferred to New Haven, and Mrs. Salmon directed it while working for the Yale University and New Haven Visiting Nurse Associations. She took a position as Assistant Executive Secretary of the American Nurses Association's Foreign Nurse Prog ram, New York City, before moving to Middletown to become Medical Clinical Supervisor at Middlesex Memorial Hospital in 1953. For 15 years she worked as Executive Director of the Connecticut League for Nursing, Middletown. Following her retirement in the 1970s, she served as a volunteer at Middlesex Hospital for nearly 20 years.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. Paul Salmon of Louisville, Ky., and Dr. Charles Salmon of Lansing, Mich.; a daughter, Kathleen Kelleher of Mattawan, Mich.; a sister, Cathrine M. Banwarth of Wauwatosa, Wisc.; and a grandson, Brian Kelleher. She was predeceased by a brother, Cletus S. Banworth; and an infant daughter, Claire Marie Salmon.
The funeral will be Monday, 8:15 a.m., from the Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middlet own, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 9 a.m., in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Middletown. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, South Glastonbury.
