Ella Leila Burton Scarborough was born 17 Feb 1847 in Pond Town Ga, now called Ellaville, which was named in her honor. At that time, Pond Town was in extreme northern Sumter County, but was part of Schley County after 1857 when Schley was created from Sumter.

She was married first to Edward Amos in September of 1869. Their daughter Annie Claire Amos was born a year after the marriage. Annie Clair's father, Eddie, died 3 months after her birth. (Annie Claire is listed 10 years later in the 1880 Schley County census living with her grandparents, Captain Robert Burton and his wife Martha.) After the death of her husband Edward Amos in December of 1870, Ella subsequently married John Newton Scarborough in 1877. Their first child, a son (not named) was born a year later and died at birth. He is buried in the Burton family plot in Ellaville City Cemetery. They later moved to Americus. Their subsequent children were Robert Henry (1879-1967) (m. Janet Augusta Burton), Stella (1882-1964) (m. William Green Turpin), and Leila (1887-1918) (m. Harry Hightower Jarrard). The 1900 census indicates that Ella had borne 5 children with 4 living, the deceased child being the aforementioned Infant Boy.
