Vera Evelyn Hanson, 90, passed away in Oklahoma City on July 18, 2014 after a long illness. A resident of Oklahoma City for more than a half-century, she was born in Lovington, New Mexico on March 21, 1924 to Bernice and Arthur Bryan Hennington.

Evelyn grew up on a farm on the windy, high plains of New Mexico, and attended Prairieview School in Lea County. She graduated from Lovington High School, and then attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico.

She married Charles G. Abel in 1944. After his discharge from six years of military service (WWII) as Air Force Captain, they moved to Memphis, TN, where their three children were born. When the children were small, in 1960, they moved to Oklahoma City where Evelyn has lived since. After that marriage ended, in 1978, she married Firefighter, Mel Hanson who served 32 years in the OKC Fire Department, and retired as Captain. Mel preceded her in death in 1993. Her brother, Paul Hennington also preceded her in death in 2008.

She is survived by her three children: daughters, Margaret Abel, Tamara Abel Winkler, (husband, David) of Oklahoma City; and son, Charles Bryan Abel (wife, Linda) of Coos Bay, OR; 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Lady Joan Nellis, (husband, Richard) of Memphis, TN.

Evelyn was a long-time member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. She always enjoyed singing and listening to gospel music. Photography and flower gardening were long-time hobbies. She found special joy in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 2123 N Classen Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK 73106 or to the charity of your choice. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. (Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper)
