Born in Virginia about 1798 to unknown parents John married Nancy Littlepage, also of Virginia, on Oct. 18, 1819 in Madison County, AL. he may have been the John Green enumerated in Madison County, Tennessee for the 1830 census. About 1837 Nancy died perhaps en route to Texas where John is in Jasper County in November of 1838. In October of 1847 he was in Tyler County where he served a six month term in jail and was fined $100 for living with and having children out of wedlock with a widow Sarah Park. On April 25, 1848 he and Sarah were married. They had four known children. The delay in marriage was probably because of land. John helped Sarah get a land grant which she turned over to him. In the 1850 or 1860 Census he was worth quite a lot of real estate. Sarah eventually filed a lawsuit against John for selling her land without her permission. She left him and he went to live with his son Bolen in the 1870's. He died there in Hill County and left a will on his death bed telling that his second wife deserted him.
