Graveside services for Mildred Pauline Archer, 85, of Portales, will be at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Kenna Cemetery. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Following the service, family and friends will gather at Third and Kilgore Church of Christ in Portales.
Mildred passed away January 19, 2015, in Toadlena, NM where she was visiting her son and daughter-in-law.
She was born November 25, 1929, to the home of Joseph and Jewel (Bostick) Singleton at her grandparents home in Floyd, NM. She grew up with one brother and three sisters in the Red Lake and Bluitt communities until her high school years. She began high school in Lingo, attended a year in Oakland, CA and then returned to Portales for her junior and senior years, graduating from PHS in 1947. When she was 16, she met Kenneth Archer who had just completed his service with the Marine Corps. They married on April 5, 1947, and had five children, Judy, Kenya, Greg, Bish and KayCe. She attended ENM College for a short time and then worked in a number of local businesses. She retired from Allsups convenience store and was also employed by Portales Schools cafeteria. She thoroughly enjoyed the several years she later spent as a foster grandparent in Ms. Maez's first grade classroom at RM James Elementary. While their children were young, she and Kenneth were 4-H leaders, positively influencing many Roosevelt County 4-Hers. Mildred enjoyed sewing and quilting and created many beautiful quilts for each of her children and grandchildren.
Before her health failed, she was able to make quilts for some of her great-grandchildren. She also made lap quilts that she donated to the Community Services Center. She collected bells, and she was an avid reader, enjoying fiction and non-fiction works. She spent much of her time reading and studying the Bible and was an incredible Christian role model to her family. She was a member of Third and Kilgore Church of Christ.
Those left to cherish her memory are two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Vicki Archer of Midland, TX and Bish and Karen Archer of Toadlena, NM; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Tony Aguilar of Portales, Kenya and Tom Heap of Stephenville, TX and KayCe Archer-Segura and husband, Phil of Portales; 9 grandchildren, Jeannie and Bari Harris, Karla Aguilar, Adela Aguilar, Ken and Nicole Heap, Ben and Rachel Heap, Josh and Laura Archer, Jerry Archer, Johnny and Ariel Archer, Andy and Samantha Anderson; and 16 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Charles Singleton of Portales; and two sisters, Maudine Helmer of Portales and LaVon Rhodes of Palmyra, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Audie Tidwell, and by her husband, Kenneth, who died September 3, 1999, after spending more than 52 years together.
