Elizabeth Bell, the daughter of Malinda Grimes and William Bell, was born and reared in Kentucky. She married twice and had ten children, three by her first husband and seven by her second. Elizabeth married William P. Turner when she was 18 years old. Elizabeth's second husband, George Buchanan Turner, was related to her first husband.

In 1880 Elizabeth ("E. J.') Turner lived with her daughter, Emma Dysart's family in Macon, Missouri. Although the census says she was 54, family records would put her age at 58 in 1880. Stella Turner, age 14, was also Elizabeth's daughter and was a part of this 1880 household.

The 1880 census confirms that Elizabeth was born in Kentucky and that she was a widow by 1880.
