William G. Albers, 88, of Alamogordo, N.M., passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at Betty Dare Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Alamogordo.

Bill was born April 2, 1919, in Brainerd, Minnesota, to William H. and Josephine Albers. He attended schools in Brainerd and graduated with the class of 1937. He worked for two years at the Northwest Paper Co. before beginning work at the Brainerd Post Office in 1939.

Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed on Dec. 7, 1941, and served nearly four years during World War II. On Nov. 23, 1942, he married Helen Fox of Brainerd and she accompanied him on numerous stateside assignments. Eventually, Bill was deployed to Germany as a staff sergeant in the 106th Infantry Division. He and many of his fellow soldiers survived as "Bloody Bastards of Bastogne" only to immediately start fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. There, on Jan. 13, 1945, Bill was seriously wounded by sniper fire near Stavelot, Belgium. Staff Sgt. Albers was discharged on Nov. 28, 1945, with 12 awards including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Bill returned to his employment with the post office in Brainerd after World War II and for many years drove a city route in a parcel post truck. He was awarded the Outstanding Carrier of the Year for 1949 and 1950. He became a rural mail carrier and truly enjoyed his route around numerous lakes in Minnesota's central resort and lake country. Bill retired on his 55th birthday, after 33 years of service.

Throughout his life, Bill was active in community affairs. When the local newspaper started a featured called "We Salute," Bill was the first person to be recognized as an outstanding community leader. He was a member of Park United Church and Methodist Men; he was the first president of the Edison Elementary PTA; a past commander and life member of the American Legion where he served in the color guard for many years, as well as a member of the 40 & 8; a past commander and life member of many other veterans' groups including the DAV the VFW, and the Purple Heart Association; he served on the Council of the Campfire Girls; and was a life member of the Elks. He belonged to the Brainerd Quarterbacks Club and spent much time transporting various high school athletes home after practice and to out-of-town games. He was active in many other organizations. He loved his family and spent time with them camping, traveling and attending their school functions.

After retiring from the post office, Bill worked as a bailiff in Crow Wing County District Court before moving to Alamogordo in 1980 to begin the second phase of his life with Helen. They worked for two years operating their 16-unit apartment complex with their partners, Clarence and Jay Martens. Bill was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Alamogordo Rotary Club where he was very proud to become a Paul Harris Fellow. He loved playing golf in Cloudcroft and enjoyed the mountains of New Mexico. Bill and Helen traveled extensively and truly enjoyed their retirement.

Throughout his life, Bill was known as a friendly, outgoing individual who had a wealth of stories to tell. His personality had made him numerous lifelong friends and he will be missed by many.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Helen Albers of the family home; a son, Ronald Albers, and his wife, Rebecca, of Columbus, Ohio; his daughter, Kathie Farrell, and her husband, Richard, of Alamogordo; four grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and a sister, Dorothy Sandberg, and her husband, Charles, of Brainerd, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Larry; and a grandson.
