MRS S L CLARKSON DEAD

Mrs Septima Louise Screven Clarkson, widow of the late Rev Thomas Boston Clarkson, died yesterday at her home near Eastover, after an illness of many months. The funeral will be held at 1:30 this afternoon at Trinity church. The burial will be in the churchyard. The pallbearers will be the colored vestrymen of St Thomas' Episcopal church, Eastover, a mission for which Mrs Clarkson has labored for more than a score of years.

Mrs Septima Louise Clarkson, the seventh daughter of Rev W B Screven [Napoleon Bonaparte Screven] and Septima McPherson Edwards, was born in Richland County August 1, 1835. Her father was missionary to the negroes in the Wateree fork, and even in her early girlhood her interest in their welfare was manifested by devoting herself to the Sunday school work of Calvary church in Charleston where she lived after the death of her parents.

After the War Between the Sections, with her husband, Rev Thomas Boston Clarkson, she returned to the field of her father's early labors and there they established a mission and built St Thomas' Episcopal church. This work she kept up even after Mr Clarkson's death, and has striven unceasingly for over 30 years for the spiritual and moral uplift of the negroes in that section.

Her catechism of the church seasons, written for her own Sunday School, was so approved by Bishop Guerry that he had it published for general use. Mrs Clarkson was a woman of brilliant intellect and fervent piety, which bore her through her long illness and acute sufferings with unfailing fortitude and Christian resignation.

She leaves one daughter, Miss Julia LaRoche Clarkson, of Eastover; one sister, Mrs Edward DuBose of Charleston; several nieces and nephews and hosts of friends at the North as well as in the South.
