Lt. Col. Thomas Kenneth Quigley was born October 2, 1924 in Richmond Indiana to Abbie and Frank Quigley. He spent his youthful years there and graduated with the Richmond High School class of 1943 while on active duty in the Navy. During WWII he served on P.T. boats in the Mediterranean Sea. He was involved in two major battles and numerous other engagements. He spent the last year of WWII in various aviation training programs. After discharge, Tom attended Earlham College, Indiana University and the University of Florida. During the Korean War he requested active duty in the Air Force. After serving with the 51st Fighter Interceptor Group on Okinawa, he was assigned to the Office of Special Investigations. He served as a division chief in various OSI Districts including the Washington D.C. area, Fort Sam Houston and in Europe. While stationed in Germany he was selected as part of the 1967 U.S. Delegation to the Paris International Air Show. After being Commander of Air Force recruiting for the State of Connecticut and Florida, he retired to Siesta Key, Florida to raise his family. In Sarasota, Tom sold Real Estate then later became involved in the health care profession dealing with impaired hearing. He served on the Sarasota County Charter Review Board in the 70's and was an active participant in the local Republicans Club. Tom was a Sigma Nu at the University of Florida, a member of the Elks, VFW, Jazz Records Collectors, Flying Liars, Military Officers Association, Sarasota Yacht Club and a retired member of the Bobby Jones Golf Association.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Louise (Graham) Quigley; two sons, Thomas G. Quigley, of Sarasota and Dennis P. Quigley, of Vero Beach, FL; and grandchildren, Taylor Morrison, Tori and Devon also of Vero Beach. A grandson, Patrick, of Sarasota. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Tyler, of Sarasota and his brother, Patrick Quigley, of Richmond, Indiana.
Tom was a most caring and loving man. He adored his wife, sons, grandchildren, and everyone he came in contact with. He never spoke harshly of anyone, and being Irish was quick with a joke or a story. He loved jazz and swing music, and never missed a chance to hit the dance floor. Tom and Mary were dedicated theatre supporters, and attended many shows and fundraisers throughout the years. A fairer, kinder or more even tempered man would be hard to find.
In Tom's words 'It's been a great ride, a wonderful adventure, but it's time to move on. When you are out of ammo and have fired your last torpedo, it's time to follow an old combat PT boat procedure? and get the heck out of here!'
Tom, thank you for your military and public service, for your examples, generosity, demeanor and knowledge. You will be forever missed. You Are Loved!
A Military burial service at the Sarasota National Cemetery will be held on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 12:30 pm. Following the service, a Celebration of Tom's Life will be held at the Sarasota Yacht Club, 1100 John Ringling Blvd. beginning at 2:30 pm.
