A contemporary obituary reads as follows: Elpheus Cooper, an old pioneer of Monroe Township, passed away on Monday, July 20, at the advanced age of about 79 years. Deceased came here at a early date which this section was a wilderness. He bought a farm two miles west of Spring Mountain, which he cleared, experiencing all the hardships incident to the time of early settlers and taught public school during winter season. Mr. Cooper was much respected and loved by all for his many sterling qualities. He buried his wife Barbara about twelve years ago. He leaves three grown up children, two sons, and on daughter, besides a large circle of friends to mourn his death. His remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Disciple Cemetery, near Tiverton Centre, on Tuesday 21st. Mr. Cooper enjoyed tolerable good health until about one year past, when he took sick with dropsy, from which he never fully recovered. He was also a great sufferer from rheumatism, for quite aa while previous to his death. -- The Democratic Standard, July 31, 1896.
