Charles R. McClave, 83, a founder of the Montana Flour Mills Co., and pioneer in the country elevator business in central Montana died at San Francisco Sunday.
McClave was born at Bath, Steuben County, New York,Feb 8, 1873, the youngest of five children of Eliza Rowley and Michael Hoffman McClave. When Charles was 6, the family moved to Elmira and he attended Elmira grammar schools and the Elmira Free Academy. He left school in the fall of 1889 to take employment with the Elmira flour mill where he remained for 8 years. He resigned in 1897 to come to Montana. He spent the summer of that year on the Buffalo Creek Sheep Co. ranch in the Judith Basin near the old town of Ubet.
Returning to Elmira, McClave engaged in the distribution of western grain and mill feed in carload lots. In July 1900, he returned to the Judith Basin to make his home on the Buffalo Creek Ranch, in which he had acquired an interest.
In Sept. 1902, in Elvira, McClave married Daisy Allston Green, of Sumter, S. C. The McClaves lived on th ranch until 1904.
McClave was treasurer and general manager of Montana Flour Mills from 1911 until 1917 when he was elected president and general manager - a position he held until his resignation July 1, 1948 when he was named chairman of the board.
He and Mrs. McClave moved to San Francisco shortly thereafter. Of their 46 years in Montana, 24 years were spent in the Judith Basin, 1 year in Harlowton and 21 in Great Falls.
McClave is survived by his widow, and a daughter, Elizabeth. both of San Francisco, and a son Charles G. McClave, President of Montana Flour Mills Co.and three grandsons here.
