Marte was born on 10 Oct 1829 in Asker, Akershus, Norway, the daughter of Nils Asbjørnsen and Kirsti Halvorsdatter. At the age of 21 on 31 Aug 1851 she was married in Asker to Nils Hansen. At least four children were born to this union, the first in Asker in 1853.

Marte and Nils came to Eau Claire in the mid 1850s, and the "History of Eau Claire County" credits them as the first permanent Norwegian settlers. It seems most likely that Nils came in the early 1850s and was later joined by Marte and their daughter Marie. In 1860 they had a daughter named Helen, in 1861 a son named Harry, and in 1862 a daughter named Annetta. Nils died sometime shortly thereafter.

On 31 Mar 1868, Marte remarried, either in Eau Claire or Dunn counties, this time to a fellow Norwegian immigrant named Israel Israelson. She was 38 and he was 27. He had come to the Colfax area in 1862, making him one of the first European settlers of the town. Like many of the other young men in this area at this time, he divided part of his time to clearing land in Colfax and the rest of his time working in Eau Claire.

To this union at least three children were born. Ida Sofie was born in 1869 and later married Hans Peter Peterson. No known children. Mathilda was born 19 Aug 1870, likely in West Eau Claire, and she later became the second wife of Absolom Smith. No known children together. Oscar Julius was born about 1873 and married Susan Olivia Elliot. They had four children.
