Nellie was the first of three children born to Samuel A Wise and Mary Alice Garver, who married on 14 Sep 1882 in Marshall Co., Indiana. Their three children were Nellie B. (18 Mar 1883), Nelson Glenn (12 Jun 1885), and Lenora Irene (Nov 1888).

As the 1890 Census is no longer around, the five of them first appeared together on the 1900 Census, living in (Burr Oak, I think), Union Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. Samuel Wise, aged 39, was one of the many farmers in the area. Mary, aged 36, reported that she had had three children. There with their parents were Nellie, aged 17, Nelson, aged 14, and Lenora, aged 11.

Two years after that census, Nellie married Harry Carlton Sarber on 4 May 1902 in New Baltimore, Berrien Co., Michigan. Harry was the son of Perry E. Sarber and Eliza J. Smith. Harry and Nellie welcomed son Lamar Clinton on 2 Aug 1904. The three of them appeared together on the 1910 Census, living in Green Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. Harry Sarber, aged 30, was earning a living as a traveling salesman for a medical firm. Nellie, aged 28, reported that she had had one child, and that she was working as a dressmaker. There with his parents was Lamar, aged 5.

On his 12 Sep 1918 WWI registration, Harry Sarber, aged 38, reported that he was living in La Paz, Marshall Co., Indiana, and working as a self-employed machinist. Wife Nellie was noted as his nearest relative. He was described as short and of medium build, with blue eyes and brown hair.

By the 1920 Census, the family was living in Union Township in St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Harry (Mary on the record), aged 37, was still working as a machinist in a garage. Nellie, aged 37, was keeping house. Still at home with his parents was 15-year-old son Lamar (enumerated with middle name Clinton on the record).

In 1928, there was cause for a family celebration. (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 12 Dec 1928 pg. 7) "The wedding of Miss Naomi Harpster and La Marh Sarber occurred at 8:30 Saturday morning at the Methodish parsonage. Reve. H.L. Adams performing the ceremony. Miss Harpster is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Harpster and since graduating from the local high school, has been employed at South Bend. Mr. Sarber is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sarber, also a graduate of the Leiters high school, and both young people have a host of friends who extend their best wishes. After the ceremony the young couple left for points in Michigan, and returned Sunday evening to enjoy a wedding supper served at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Harpster. Among the supper guests were Misses Bess Harpster and Estelle Walker, Claude Kazee, Dick Murphy, all of South Bend, Mrs. Gladys Woods and children of Leiters Ford."

You have to love what a small-town newspaper finds space to print. (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 5 Jun 1929 pg. 7) "Harry Sarber purchased a new Chevrolet sedan Saturday and Lamarh Sarber is driving a new Essex sport coupe."

A month later, the stork made a visit. (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 31 Jul 1929 pg. 3) "An eight pound daughter arrived at the Kelley hospital, July 26th to Mr. and Mrs. LaMahr Sarber, and has been named Marilyn Jean. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sarber and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Harpster are rejoicing over the arrival of this first grandchild."

The 1930 Census placed Nellie's family in Aubbeenaubbee, Fulton Co., Indiana. Harry, aged 50, had joined forces with his father Perry and his younger brother Harley, and was working as a highway contractor. Nellie, aged 47, was keeping house.

The family's year-old Chevy sedan took a beating that same year. (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 6 Aug 1930 pg. 7) "Mrs. Harry Sarber suffered severe bruise and a fracture Friday evening in a motor accident near Know. Mr. Sarber escaped injuries but the car was badly wrecked."

And there was more worrisome news for Nellie. (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 21 Oct 1931 pg. 7) "Mr. Harry Sarber is reported unimproved." (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 18 May 1932 pg. 3) "Mrs. Harry Sarber motored to Vicksburg, Michigan, last week end, called there by the illness of her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Samuel Wise."

And there was also reason to celebrate that year. (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 14 Sep 1932 pg. 8) "Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sarber and Mr. and Mrs. LaMarh Sarber and daughter Marilyn are motoring to Vicksburg, Mich., to assist Sunday in the golden wedding celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Wise, parents of Mrs. Harry Sarber and former residents of Marshall county. Their three children and families, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Wise and family of Lima, Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sarber, and Mr. and Mrs. Don Crook and family of Vicksburg will enjoy a family dinner and open house from 2 to 5 o'clock for friends and neighbors. Mrs. Charles Bunn will accompany the Sarber family and assist in this event."

Then the dark cloud returned. (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 18 Jan 1933 pg. 3) "Mrs. Harry Sarber has been confined to her home by illness." (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 15 Feb 1933 pg. 3) "Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Wise and daughter, Mrs. Don Crook of Vicksburg, Mich., motored here to spend the week end with the former's daughter, Mrs. Harry Sarber, and Mr. Sarber. Mrs. Sarber came home from Woodlawn hospital Friday, where she was taken Wednesday for observation and treatment. While still confined to her bed, Mrs. Sarber shows slight improvement." (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 1 Mar 1933 pg. 3) "Mr. and Mrs. Don (Lenora) Crook and the latter's father, Samuel Wise of Vicksburg, Mich., were here this week to visit Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sarber. Mrs. Sarber remains about the same, and Mr. Sarber is unimproved."

Harry got out of the road construction business in the spring of 1933. (From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 16 Mar 1933 pg. 2) "Harry Sarber has purchased the Ziders and Spencer meat market and has moved it to the Clifton grocer where the two businesses will be conducted by Messrs. Clifton and Sarber."

The years 1933 and 1934 were a mix of guarded optimism and foreboding. (From: Logansport Pharos-Tribune, Logansport, IN – Mon 20 Mar 1933 pg. 5) "Mrs. Harry Sarber of Leiters Ford who has been ill for the past ten weeks is slowly improving." (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 26 Apr 1933 pg. 3) "Mrs. Harry Sarber, who has been confined to her home several months by a prolonged illness was removed to Woodlawn hospital Saturday and underwent a major operation Monday afternoon. Her father, Samuel Wise of Vicksburg, Michigan, and her immediate family are at her bedside. Mr. Harry Sarber has been ill many months, and shows slight improvement." (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 7 Mar 1934 pg. 5) Mrs. Harry Sarber remains very low. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Wise, and daughter, Mrs. Don Crook of Vicksburg, Michigan were here over the week end."

In the spring of 1934, they lost her on 16 Mar 1934, two days before what would have been her fifty-first birthday. (From: The Culver Citizen, Culver, IN – Wed 21 Mar 1934 pg. 14) "She was a most noble and patient sufferer in her last year of illness, and so appreciative of all that loving hands could do and of the many tokens of kindly deeds bestowed by neighbors and friends. With an implicit faith in her God and that she could meet her loved ones and many friends in her eternal home were always uppermost in her mind, she has passed to her reward, but is not forgotten."

Nellie apparently wrote her own final chapter of life. (From: The Indianapolis Star, Indianapolis, IN – Sat 17 Mar 1934 pg. 4) "MRS. HARRY SARBER. ROCHESTER, Ind., March 16.—The family of Mrs. Harry Sarber, 50 years old, who died at her farm home ten miles north of the city today, will follow plans she made several weeks ago for her funeral services. She gave details as to the manner in which she wished to be dressed and the funeral arrangements. Mrs. Sarber asked that the services be held at the Methodist Church at Leiter's Ford with the Rev. B. Rauch of Plymouth in charge, followed by interment in the cemetery at Plymouth.
