Holtzworth, a Civil War veteran, became one of the first battlefield guides in Gettysburg. His knowledge of the battle was highly respected and he spent much of his time lecturing. Among his guests on the battlefield were Presidents Grant, Hayes and Cleveland; Generals Meade, Sheridan, Sherman, Hancock, Sickles, Warren, Slocum and Longstreet.
