94, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Lacefield was born on September 22, 1920, in Muhlenberg County, KY, the son of Eugene S. and Ottie Mae Ferrell Lacefield. After graduating from Muhlenberg County High School, he enrolled in the engineering school at the University of Kentucky, but had to leave after three years due to financial difficulties during the Great Depression. He then went to work for the Southern Bell Telephone Company.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, and served as a communications officer during World War II. After the war, he married an Army nurse, Florance C. Ayers, who was a native of Paulding County, Ohio. Mr. Lacefield completed his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Louisville and worked for Southern Bell (now AT&T) for over 30 years, first in Central City and then in Louisville. He was instrumental in the establishment of the microwave relay system that linked small towns and connected Kentucky to the world; and he also taught microwave transmission technology. His first wife "Flossie" died in 1974.

In 1976, he married Mary Catherine "Molly" Hermes O'Keefe, a registered nurse and a native of Louisville. After retirement, he returned to the game of tennis which he had played in college. "Drop shot Charlie" was the number one senior tennis player in Kentucky for four years, and he and Molly were second in the nation in the 1980's. Charles and Molly travelled extensively playing tennis. They lived in Louisville together for over 38 years and wintered at their home in Sarasota, Florida. He was very active and healthy well into his late 80's, and took a keen interest in his extensive family, tennis, and politics. He was also a Mason for over 70 years.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Molly; his three sons, Warren E. Lacefield (Sylvia), Eugene C. Lacefield (Mary Margaret Lowe), and Morgan T. Lacefield (Pam); his step-children, Judith O'Keefe Kenney and Frederick O'Keefe (Pam); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, January 16, 2015 at Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road "in St. Matthews". A funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 3345 Lexington Road, Louisville.
