Jesse James Crabtree Jr., 87, of LaGrange died Thursday (July 28, 2011) in Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.
He was born Jan. 18, 1924, in West Quincy, a son of Jesse James and Susie (Sinclair) Crabtree Sr. He married Betty Dopheide in June 1948. She survives.
He was a 30-year career veteran of the United States military, having served seven years in the U.S. Navy and 23 years in the U.S. Army. He entered the service in 1941 and served aboard the USS Nevada. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He also served a tour in Korea and three tours in Vietnam.
After returning from service, Mr. Crabtree was a 1974 graduate of Gem City College and later became an instructor at the college. He was owner of JC Jewelers and also owned a Conoco gas station. He was a member of the Quincy Consistory, Moose Lodge, Elks, and the VFW.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by nine children, Jesse Crabtree and his wife, Frances, of Quincy, Gary J. Crabtree and his wife, Margaret, of LaGrange, Deborah Whalen and her husband, Steve, of Burlington, Iowa, Cheryl Vahle and her husband, Ronnie, of LaGrange, Charlotte Ash and her husband, Dan, of Warsaw, Ill., Romie Knotts and her husband, Mike, of Burlington, Wayne Crabtree and his wife, Roxanne, of Quincy, Tina Farr and her husband, Brad, of LaGrange, and General Crabtree of LaGrange; a daughter-in-law, Linda Crabtree of Springfield, Ill., numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives, including his sister-in-law, Marjorie Crabtree.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Crabtree was preceded in death by a son, Rev. John Crabtree; a granddaughter, Cheryl Smith; three brothers, Arthur Elder, Orin Elder and Harvey Crabtree; and a sister, Susie Mitchell.
SERVICES: 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home with Pastor Keith Garner conducting. Interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 37 and Illinois National Guard Military Honors Detail.
VISITATION: Noon until time of services Tuesday in the funeral home.
