Mary Margaret "Nellie" Bloom Frankfother Aldridge

When Mary Margaret's husband, Thomas Frankfother, died of pneumonia in December 1893, she was pregnant with her last child, Leona (born the following June), and faced the grim realities attendant to being a widow with children to clothe and feed. The family was allowed to reside on the Frankfother family farm, but as time went on, Mary Margaret was not only caring for her children, she dutifully hosted relations who enjoyed staying at the farm for extended periods of time. Her daughter Cora later recalled how hard her mother worked to sustain life on the farm.

When her sons left the farm to make their way in the world, she moved into town (North Baltimore, Ohio) where she found work as a cook and housekeeper. Her youngest children, Cora and Leona, eventually dropped out of school to work in a local cigar factory to help with expenses.

Cora later recalled how throughout these challenging years her mother told them, "Never wear a poor face." When Jesse Alonzo Aldridge's wife died in 1903, Mary Margaret began keeping house for him and his two young children. Cora later told of her mother's arrival at the grieving house, which was in chaos, the children hungry and crying for their mother. She rolled up her sleeves and rummaging in the kitchen found stale bread and some spices, from which she baked a pan of dressing. She married Jesse Aldridge in 1905, and Cora and Leona, the last two children at home, became members of this family unit. Leona died of tuberculosis at 17 in October 1911, after a prolonged decline during which Mary Margaret was nearly constantly at her side.

In January of 1913 Mary Margaret notified Cora that her grandmother Frankfother, Mary's former mother-in-law, was gravely ill. Cora, recently married (to True Bosler) and living in Detroit, boarded a train there. Upon arriving in North Baltimore, she was met with the sad and shocking news that her mother had died of a stroke. The following day her grandmother Frankfother also died.

Bio by Daniel Bosler, Mary Margaret's great-grandson, as related in an oral history by his grandmother Cora Frankfother Bosler.

Weekly Beacon, North Baltimore Ohio, January 24, 1913

The death of Mrs. J.A. Aldridge Sabbath morning at 9 o'clock was very unexpected. She was as well as usual Saturday and did all her work. She anxiously awaited a visit from her daughter, Mrs. Cora Bosler, of Detroit, and after dinner she received word of the serious illness of her first mother-in-law, Mrs. Frankfother, near Jerry City. She was preparing to take the 4:30 car for Jerry City when she suffered a stroke of apoplexy and soon became unconscious. Sabbath morning she suffered another stroke which resulted fatally.

Mrs. A is survived by two sons and three daughters, the former two of Wood County, Mrs. Bosler, Mrs. Bertha Matthews of Tiffin, and Mrs. Sylvia Wisaspa, who resides in the state of Washington.

At the time of her death, she was 55 years, 3 months and 21 days old.

The funeral was held Wednesday at ten o'clock, burial in Maplewood.
