This memorial page was revised on 23 March 2015 to remove all reference of a marriage to Elizabeth Bacon. It is now believed that Elizabeth was married to a different David Stevens, also of Washington County,Tennessee (see Memorial #143879531). That David Stevens is believed to be the nephew of the older David of this memorial.

The David Stevens (a.k.a David Stephens) of this memorial was the 6th of 8 children born to Henry Ward Stevens and Margaret Forster; he had 5 brothers and 2 sisters. He was born in Washington County, North Carolina, before Washington County was transferred to Tennessee in 1796 by the US Congress.

It is believed that the 80 year old man living with Eliza and William Rhea and shown as "Stephen M C Ray" on the 1870 Census in District 14 of Monroe County, Tennessee, is actually David Stevens of this memorial - the Rhea's are his daughter and son-in-law. David lived with the Rheas before the 1860 Census was taken - see that census record. And since he did not appear on the 1880 Census with them, it is assumed that he died at their home in about 1875.

According to marriage records, David married Luranah Duncan (1790-1840) on September 1, 1814 in Washington Co. Tennessee.

Luranah's first name is uncertain; "Lurena" & "Luranah" are shown respectively on Tennessee and US & International Marriage Records. However, her mother was Luranah Malkey Duncan(1752-1828) - Memorial #36842502 and most likely her namesake. The name “Luranah” is on her mother’s headstone.

One public tree shows that Luranah died in 1823 and another shows she died in 1828. The latter date is her mother's year of death. On the otherhand, most public trees on Ancestry.com show that Luranah died in 1840. But none of Ancestry trees provide supporting documentation for her death date.

At this time, it is believed that David and Luranah may have had 7 children as shown in the following list:

Children:
Joel Duncan Stephens (1816-1890)
Eliza Stevens Rhea (1817-1892)
James R. Stevens (1820-1894)
Roseanna Giles Stevens (1821-1856)
John Franklin Stephens (1823-1897)
Frances Stevens (1829-????)
Henry Stevens (1831-????)

The last 2 children have not been confirmed. The first 4 children in the list have memorial links shown below.

Note that some of their children spelled their surnames as "Stephens," while others used the "Stevens" spelling.
