The third of four children born to Norman Joseph Schaaf (1894-1974) and Alfrieda Charlotte Anna Elizabeth Kirschstein Schaaf (1894-1994), Gloria grew up in Minneapolis and Bloomington, Minnesota. On February 15, 1947, she married Alexander Charles Brooks (Red) Lyle (1913-2001), who emigrated from Scotland with his family at age 13. The couple had two daughters, Barbara Ann (b. 1950) and Deborah (b. 1958). Gloria and Red lived in Sacramento, California, where they raised their family, and where Gloria worked as a chemist at McClellan Air Force Base. Known for her loving and optimistic nature, Gloria was much beloved by her family and friends.
