He became President-elect John Fitzgerald Kennedy's personal pilot in 1960. He was the pilot who commanded Air Force One for President Kennedy and flew the body of the slain president to Washington DC from Dallas in 1963. He first heard the account of the president's assassination from a portable radio inside the cockpit. He spoke of the bind they were in because there was no place on Air Force One for a casket, so the rear seats for stewardesses were unbolted to make room for the casket.
Interment on June 22, 2006.
