Reubin Bates married a Miss Nancy Edmunds, whose father was a successful planter, living on the James River below Richmond, Virginia. He was the son of Reubin Bates, a patriot who fought in the Infantry during the Revolutionary War.

Reubin Bates was an architect and builder. He was a builder of many houses of note. He is said to have worked for Thomas Jefferson building Monticello and had the contract to build the State House at Richmond and failed before he finished it and lost all.

Reubin and Nancy Bates married on November 7, 1801 in Amherst County, Virginia, and had 5 children. He was a member of the Nelson County (Virginia) Militia and fought with them in the War of 1812. In 1820, they moved to Barren County, Kentucky where he died in 1853.
