"Alias Edward Farley"

Civil War Veteran who served with Company I, 44th Wisconsin Infantry. His name is on the rolls for the company under the alias of Edward Farley, which also appears on his pension paperwork under his given name. There is no way to know why this happened, but his pension has both names, and Conley does not appear on the roster for the company. He enlisted as Edward Farley on February 3, 1865, and served with the company until mustering out on August 28th, 1865. His widow Mary filed for a widow's pension shortly after his death in 1914. A separate pension record exists for Edward Farley with the name Patrick E. Conley below the name "Farley, Edward (alias)" They are the same person. Edward Farley is also listed as an alias on his marriage certificate to Mary in January of 1866.

Separate Patrick Conley's served with the 23rd and 35th Wisconsin Infantry. They are not Patrick E. Conley buried at Mt. Olivet.

"AN OLD RESIDENT OF THE CITY IS DEAD"

Patrick E. Conley Passed to World Beyond Late Monday Afternoon at Daughter's Home.

After three years of patient suffering, Patrick E. Conley, one of the older residents of Janesville, passed to the world beyond at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Daniel Connell, in the town of Rock, shortly after three o'clock. For the past three years Mr. Conley has been an invalid, suffering from paralytic stroke.

Patrick Conley was born at Newtown, County Gore, Ireland in 1839. He came to America in 1852, landing in New York, where he remained for a short time, later removing to Janesville, where he has since made his home. He had a large number of friends in this city who will be grieved to learn of his demise. During the Civil War he served with the 44th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry with much credit. In 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ratchford, and the widow and five children born of this union are left to mourn his loss, one child dying in infancy. They are William Conley of Sauk Center, Minnesota, Patrick Conley of Carroll, Iowa, Mrs. (Margaret) John Smith of Sampson, Wisconsin, Mrs. (Catherine) Michael O'Donnell of Monroe, and Mrs. (Rosella) Daniel Connell of Janesville.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday morning at ten o'clock from St. Patrick's Church, and the internment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.]]]

Patrick and his wife Mary had six children. One died as an infant, and is probably buried in Mt. Olivet with Patrick. There others were:

Margaret (Smith) born 1867
Cathernine (O'Donnell) born 1873 died 1937 Monroe Wis
Patrick born 1876 died 1942 Janesville Wis (buried in Iowa)
William born 1878
Rosella (Connell) born 1884 died 1980 Milton Wis

Mary died in Green County on Feb. 14, 1920. She was born in Ireland in 1843, and came to Janesville in 1865.
