As a student he first studied law for a time at Columbia Law School and then took up architecture which began his lif per membere work. Among his best known buildings are those of the General Theological Seminary in Chelsea . For Yale University he designed Vanderbilt and Phelps Halls, the University Library, and the Mason, Sloane and Osborne laboratories and the dormitories of the Sheffield Scientific School.

His churches include St. Ignatius Church, NYC and the garrison chapel of St. Cornelius on Governors Island. Among other buildings in New York City are the New York Cancer Hospital, Artillery Armory, Bronx and the Havemeyer home, Fifth Avenue.
