Hattie was the daughter of Conrad Grenert and Catherine Holdeman, who married on 15 Apr 1866 in Elkhart Co., Indiana. The couple had four children together--Franklin (b.9 Feb 1867 Elkhart, IN), Harriet "Hattie" (b.Apr 1868), Samuel (b.Mar 1874), and Henry J. (b.13 Mar 1877). On both the 1900 and 1910 Census records, Catherine would report that she had had only four children.

I found the family on the 1870 Census, living in Olive, Elkhart Co., Indiana, where Conrad Grenert, aged 26, was farming for a living. Catherine, aged 24, was home with their two children--Franklin, aged 3, and Harriet, aged 2.

By the 1880 Census, the family had moved to Washington, Starke Co., Indiana, where Conrad, aged 36, was working a new farm. Catherine, aged 34, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents were Franklin, aged 13, Harriet, aged 12, Samuel, aged 6, and Henry, aged 3.

Seven years after that census, on 2 Oct 1887, Hattie married George Marion Sprague in Starke Co., Indiana. He was 22, she 19. George and Hattie had three children together—Melvin Benjamin (1 Jun 1889 Burr Oak, Starke Co., IN – 24 Oct 1975 Pompano Beach, Broward Co., FL), Anna C. (b.1892 IN), and Inez Leona (b.24 Oct 1893 Starke Co., IN).

The five of them appeared together on the 1900 Census, living in Polk Township, Marshall Co., Indiana, where George, aged 35, was farming for a living, as had his father George Senior. Hattie, aged 32, reported that she had had three children, and that all had survived to that census. Indeed, there with their parents were Melvin, aged 10, Anna, aged 8, and Inez, aged 6.

When the 1910 Census came around, the family was still living in Polk Township. George, aged 45, was busy with the farm. Hattie, aged 42, again reported that all three of her children were living. They were all still at home with their parents—Melvin, aged 20, Anna, aged 18, and Inez, aged 16.

George and Hattie would see all three of their children marry in the few years that followed that census. Eldest son Melvin was the first to fledge, marrying Maybelle Wright on 1 Jun 1912 in St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Both of George and Hattie’s two daughters married on 23 Aug 1913 in Marshall County. Anna married Arthur Ruff, the son of Samuel Ruff and Etta May Wilson. Inez married William Earl Stoneburner, the son of Elijah and Mary Stoneburner.

In 1916, George would have received the news of the death of his half-brother John at age 70.

By the 1920 Census, George and Hattie’s nest in Polk Township was empty. George, aged 55, had gotten a job as a dealer in machinery. Hattie, aged 51, was keeping house, much quieter without the children there, but by that census, she had four grandchildren to dote on—Melvin’s son George (b.1913), Anna’s son Oren (b.1917) and daughter Lucille (b.1919), and Inez’s son Alva (b.1919).

Sadly, seven years after that census, after forty years together, George lost his wife and helpmate Hattie in 1927. She would have been about 59 years old.

More sad news arrived the following year when George would learn of the death of his other half-brother Isaac in 1928 at age 78.

George appears to have remarried between 1928 and 1930. He appeared with second-wife Alice on the 1930 Census. They were living on Thayer St. in Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana. George, aged 64, was working as a bailiff in county court. Alice, aged 57, was keeping house.

The couple was still living in Plymouth in 1940. George, aged 75, was back farming. Alice, aged 61, was at home.

Three years after that census, George died in 1943 at age 79ish, and was laid to rest next to first-wife Hattie. I do not know the fate of George’s second-wife Alice.

As for George and Hattie’s three children…
Son Melvin and his wife Maybelle stayed in the Plymouth area and raised son George Melvin (b.1913) together. Melvin was a grocer and a dry goods salesman. Maybelle died in 1946 and Melvin had her laid to rest next to his parents here in Oak Hill.

Daughter Anna and husband Arthur Ruff started out in Polk Township, moved to South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana for a time, and then returned to Polk Township. They raised two children, son Oren R. (b.1917) and daughter Lucille E. (b.1919). Anna was a seamstress. Arthur was a farmer for a time and then worked as an assembler for an auto factory and later as a brake setter in the auto industry.

Daughter Inez and husband William Stoneburner also settled first in Polk Township where William was a public school teacher. They welcomed son Alva in 1919, and daughter Margaret M. in 1927. Sometime before 1930, the family moved in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, where William was a professor at an endowed university. William died in 1954 at age 62 (F.A.G. # 139485452).
