Mary Virginia "Jennie" Rankin was the daughter of John Rankin and Eliza Ann Fish. She married Sgt. William Bloomfield Powers on 18 Nov 1866 in Jackson County, West Virginia. They had seven known children: Joseph Hayward Powers (47631043 ), Minerva Powers Donley Highland (70036293), George Washington Powers, David Powers Baker (48079691 ), Thomas Benton Powers (112146908 ), Fletcher Tarance Powers (103979152 ), and Jerry F. Powers.
Mary Virginia "Jennie" Rankin Powers died about 1878. Most of the children remained living with their father William Bloomfield Powers and his second wife, Rebecca Traux Robison Powers. However, two sons (Joseph Hayward and David) moved to live with William Bloomfield Powers' sister, Mary Virginia Powers Baker and her husband William Henry Baker. Joseph Hayward Powers later married Hannah Snyder and continued to use the name Powers. For unknown reasons, David later married Isabelle Meeker using the name of his "adopted" family, Baker. Both Joseph Hayward and David are found on the 1880 census living with Mary Virginia Powers Baker and William Henry Baker and listed with the last name Rankin, their mother's maiden name.
