Born on June 1, 1910, in Somerset County, Mary Anne Tawes Hoene was the daughter of the late Dr. Patrick Henry Tawes and Winnie Leach Tawes. She was a graduate of Cambridge High School and Madeira School and Vassar College. In June of 1931, she married Herman Henry Hoene. He died on March 22, 1975.

Mrs. Hoene was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge and a member and former curator of the Dorchester County Historical Society. She was also a member of the Elkridge Club of Baltimore and a member of the Cambridge and Annapolis Yacht Clubs. She was a life member of the Somerset Historical Society and a member of the Dorchester County Federated Garden Club.
