Inscription
Five Carlyle children are buried with their mother. Her tablet, now illegible, was documented by several sources in the past and is quoted in volume 1 of "Tombstone Inscriptions of Alexandria, Virginia," by Wesley Pippenger: "To the memory of Mrs. Sarah Carlyle, wife of Col. John Carlyle, Mercht in Alexandria, and daughter of the Hon. Wm. Fairfax Esq....Who died in Child-bed of her seventh child, the 22d of Jan. 1761, aged 30 years 22 days. She was amiable thru life as a dutiful child, loving wife, affectionate parent, indulgent mistress, faithful friend, sincere Christian and is thence justly lamented by all who knew her....Nigh her lie five of her children, Rachel, Ann, William, George Fairfax and Hannah."
