He grew up in and around Jacksboro, Texas, a small town northwest of Fort Worth. He graduated from Jacksboro High School and received a degree in pre-law from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1952 he graduated with a JD from the UT School of Law. In 1972 he received a Masters in Anthropology from the University of Texas, where he was a briefly a teaching assistant.
On June 6, 1953, Royston married Anita Nell Anderson and the couple settled in Austin. There, he embarked upon a career in public service, first with the State Attorney General’s Office, then the Comptroller’s Office, the State Highway Department in Austin and San Antonio, and finally the Texas Water Development Board, from which he retired in 1991. He did a brief stint with the Lubbock City Attorney in the 1960's, but after enduring a winter in the Lubbock climate, was soon back in Central Texas. In 1974, he and Anita bought a home in Round Rock, where Anita grew up, and lived there until he became ill.
Royston was a member of the Round Rock Kiwanis Club. For many years he sat on the Board of the Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest. He and Anita have been members of Palm Valley Lutheran Church for more than 40 years.
Royston is survived by his wife, Anita; his sisters Connie Belle Bath and husband Alan, and Phyllis Evelyn Welsch and husband Linden; four children and their spouses; Cynthia Lanning Hampton and Keith Stewart Hampton; Royston Conrad Lanning and Ricki Davis Lanning; Julia Berenice Lanning Mallin and Charles Michael Mallin; and James Harder Lanning and Monica Hinojosa Lanning; grandchildren Rebekah Clare Hampton, Emily Katherine Lanning Berquist and spouse Peter Berquist; Mollie Elizabeth and Lanning Ziegler Mallin; and James Richard, Bryan Royston, and Robert William Lanning; and many nieces and nephews.
Royston was a loving and devoted husband and father. He and Anita were married for more than 61 years and were never away from each other for more than a short time.
Services at Palm Valley Lutheran Church, 2500 East Palm Valley Blvd., Round Rock, Texas. Burial immediately following in the church cemetery, with reception in the fellowship hall. Beck Funeral Home directors of arrangements.
