A dentist, he married Mary A. Taylor in San Francisco in 1885. In 1898, he and wife went north, with the intention of going to the Klondike, but instead went to Atlin, British Columbia and were among the first prospectors there. They returned to California in early 1899 and headed again to Atlin in March - wife Mary A. died on the trail in April 1899.
