Jane's mother Electa died during childbirth in 1887. The baby died five weeks later,and then her father Chester died the following year and so Jane and Samuel raised her younger brothers and sisters Dan, Ida, Ella and Ralph.
Jane also had nine children of her own that she raised. They were Viola, Levi, Daniel, Samuel Alonzo, Susannah Hopkins, Iva Henderson, Franklin Dewey, John Dean, Issac Conrad, and Thomas Wesley.
