Fairfield Recorder newspaper - Aug. 19, 1904 issue

AUG. 14 - Another old settler of Texas has passed over the cold river of death. Richard Hays Sr., died suddenly of heart failure last night about 10 o'clock, and was buried at the Woodland cemetery this evening at 5 o'clock. Funeral services by Eld. H. B. Laney. Mr. Hays was born in Missouri 67 years ago, and moved to Texas when 14 years old. He spent most of his early manhood on the frontier, being in Mexico many times, and had much to do in bringing Texas to the high
standard it now maintains. He was a good citizen, honest and upright, and leaves many fiends, besides an aged companion and four children to mourn his sudden demise. He was successful in his business and leaves his aged wife in good circumstances.
