After a brief illness, longtime Pocatello resident, LueCille Hymas Isham, 91, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, on January 5, 2015.
The fifth child of Wilford and Ether May Call Hymas, LueCille was born on December 8, 1923 on a farm in Rigby, Idaho. She was born into a mucsical family and when very young, she and her sisters, would gather round the family piano to practice for upcoming performances. She first learned to harmonize with her sisters while walking the fields to pull out mustard weeds.
The four sisters traveled for a time doing performances for the Pfaff Sewing Machine company and church and valley music productions. They were the first live TB Commercial on KID TV performing a song her sister Ora composed for the Pfaff company.
She grew up in a very happy, humble home, with the simple life of hard work and lots of family activities and times to just be young. One of her favorite summer activities was to swim in the area canal at the end of the day to see the swallow nests under the bridges and to play 'jacks' with her sisters.
Her interests in school were drama, performing in many plays and in orchestra where she played the bass violin. Her favorite past time was writing and she belonged to the Quill & Scroll Club and served on the school newspaper.
She took business classes and became proficient in shorthand. She first used this talent, on a winter day in December, 1941, writing down the entire "a date which will live in infamy" speech, given by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Congress, when he asked for a declaration of war, after Japan bombed Peal Harbor and swept the United States into World War II. She later used these same skills and that of typing while working for Union Pacific Railroad, New York Life and Pocatello School District at Alameda Jr. High and Highland High School. LueCille married Merel P. Isham, March 22, 1947 in Pocatello, Idaho. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple. They had one son, Robert Preston Isham, and also enjoyed Merelyn, Merel's daughter from a previous marriage.
During their fifty five years together Merel and Cille enjoyed many activities, including water skiing, square dancing, camping, and biking. Cille's greatest hobby was gardening and she worked endlessly to beautify their home and gardens. Someone asked her how many species of plants she had planted through the years, most of them still growing. She could not answer, as each fall she looked forward to the next spring and would always sketch out her plans for that new planting.
She also enjoyed a long life of playing the piano and organ and teaching any and all neighborhood children the basics of piano and singing and helped in any way possible to increase their confidence in their musical abilities. Additionally she led her church choir for a time and did many Christmas Contatas.
Cille is survived by her son, Robert Preston and his wife Carla (Bentel) Isham, along with her grandson David Preston Isham and her brother Stanford Hymas.
LueCille was preceded in death by her husband, Merel, her mother and father and her siblings, Ora, Leonard, Marion and Gwen.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 16, 2015 in the LDS Alameda 1st Ward, 954 E. Walnut, Pocatello, at 11:00 am.
