Mary was the daughter of William Zehner and Margaret Landis Grossman, who married circa 1859. I found seven children for the couple, but there may have been others--Sylvester (b.circa 1861), Cyrus W. (b.circa 1863), Mary (b.1865), Solomon or Saloma R. (b.circa 1867), Selena (b.circa 1869), Ella P. (b.circa 1872), and Jesse A. (b.1877).

I found the family on the 1870 Census, living in West Township (today part of Plymouth), Marshall Co., Indiana, where William Zehner, aged 37, was a miller at a grist mill. Margaret, aged 30, was busy at home with their five children--Sylvester, aged 9, Cyrus, aged 7, Mary, aged 5, Solomon (noted as male), aged 3, and Selena, aged 7 months. Also living with the family was 20-year-old George Doyart, who was working at the grist mill with William.

The family was still living in Plymouth's West Township when the 1880 Census was done. William, aged 48, was still earning a living as a miller. Margaret, aged 43, was keeping house. Home with her that census year were Sylvester, aged 18, Cyrus, aged 16, Mary, aged 14, Saloma (noted as female), aged 12, Selena, aged 10, Ella, aged 8, and Jesse, aged 4. Also living with the family was 25-year-old James E. Kreider, likely a roomer.

Eight years after that census, Mary married Jacob Wesley Hossler on 30 Sep 1886 in Marshall County. They welcomed daughter Minnie Grace a year later on 12 Oct 1887.

Tragedy struck on 6 Nov 1892, when Jacob died at age 31. It would have been about the same time Mary discovered that she was pregnant with their second child, daughter Ethel C., born seven months later on 27 Jun 1893. After Jacob's death, Mary and Grace moved to Plymouth to be closer to Mary's family.

I found Mary on the 1900 Census, widowed, aged 38, living on E. Jackson St. in Plymouth, Marshall County. With her were daughters Minnie, aged 12, and Ethel, aged 9. Mary reported that she had had only two children, and that both were still living. To provide for her children, Mary had gotten a job as a cook in a restaurant. Above and below her and the children on the census record are the names of Mary's parents William and Margaret Zehner (transcribed as "Zahner"), Mary's brother Jesse, and Mary's brother Sylvester Zehner and his wife Sadie.

On 5 Mar 1905, Mary remarried, exchanging vows with Hiram VanVactor in Plymouth.

A year later, tragedy struck again when Mary's daughter Minnie Grace fell gravely ill and eventually died on 6 Sep 1906 at age 18.

I couldn't find Mary with Hiram VanVactor in 1910, and they must have divorced sometime before 1917 because Mary married for a third time and Hiram didn't die until 1923.

In the meantime, daughter Ethel married Earl Gottschalk on 19 Aug 1911. They welcomed son Louis G. on 27 Mar 1912. Sadly, Mary's first grandchild lived only ten days, dying on 5 Apr 1912. Perhaps the arrival of two more granddaughters--Corrine I. in 1915, Mary Louise in 1919, would have lifted the family's spirits.

Mary's third marriage was to Francis D. Hossler on 3 Feb 1917 in Berrien Co., Michigan. Francis was first-husband Jacob's younger brother.

I found them on the 1920 Census, living in Plymouth's Center Township, where Francis, aged 54, was a laborer at Plymouth's basket factory, officially the Edgerton Manufacturing Co., makers of fruit and vegetable shipping containers. Mary, aged 54, was keeping house.

A year after that 1920 Census, Mary died on 19 Aug 1921, exactly ten years after daughter Ethel's wedding. Mary was 56 years old.

Mary would miss the birth of her fourth grandchild, granddaughter Emma Arabella on 18 Mar 1922, the fourth child born to daughter Ethel and husband Earl.

I couldn't find Mary's widowed husband Francis in 1930, but in 1940, he appeared, widowed, aged 74, living at 101 S. Michigan St. in Plymouth.
