John Breyfogle -- "Cap'n Brey" -- was last seen leaving for his beloved Alligator Cove Thursday, August 4, 2011, on 210 Hwy & Edwards Rd., Missouri River Mile 342.8. John's home was between Missouri City and Orrick, just above Cooley Ramp access, about 10 miles below La Benite Park. He had a home just a few feet from the river, but was staying with his sister during the flood. His truck was found there later that night. It was apparent he had walked to the river bank (footprints) and emptied his pockets onto his small deck at the water's edge. It appears he got in the water there, maybe to swim or maybe to retrieve something in the eddy. He had not been seen since that morning. No boat was used.

John's body was found January 11, 2012 and was positively identified on January 17, 2012.

He was found in a farm field by the farmer walking his property. John's wallet was there but he was officially identified by dental records.

The area was near the town of Wakenda which is between Hill's Island and Miami on the north side of the river. There was a levee breach there during the flood which is how his body was found off river.

His family and friends, while very saddened by his death, were much relieved to have his body found and thanked everyone for their kind thoughts in searching for him.

John loved the river and was one of her greatest advocates. He assisted aboard safety boats during the MR340 and worked with Missouri River Relief extensively. One of his friends on Rivermiles Forum wrote, "My hope is that John has found some of the peace he was looking for. If he did indeed drown, he did it in the river that was such a huge part of his life. He’s loved and struggled with this river for many years."
