He won his first nine decisions that year and had a no-hitter broken up on July 8 by New York's Joe Gordon, who doubled with one out in the ninth inning. In 1944, he made the American League All-Star team but did not pitch in the game. That year he was 14-15 with a 3.72 ERA for 234 innings. In 1945 he went 14-12 with a 3.44 ERA, 217 innings and 16 complete games in 30 starts. He finished his 10-year career with a 63-73 record, 3.78 ERA and 66 complete games in 152 starts.
