Lester was a graduate from Morton High School in 1929 and worked in the auto repair business until he opened his own Mobil Service Station and oil distributorship in 1941. A Buick and GMC dealership was added in 1950.
Lester was married to Esther Alzina Barnum in the Morton Methodist Church on December 13, 1936.
His first love was the timber industry. Lester started his own tree farm in 1938, which has grown to 320 acres. The Lesters were named Lewis County Tree Farmers of the Year in 1997, and Washington State Tree Farmers of the Year in 1998. Lester was one of the founding fathers of the Morton Loggers Jubilee which will celebrate its 58th anniversary this August.
Lester was a 60 year member of the Morton Masonic Lodge 209, the Scottish Rite, the Afifi Order of the Shrine, the Royal Order of Jesters, the Morton Moose Lodge, and the Centralia-Chehalis Elks. Lester served on the Morton City Council in the 1950s.
Lester love horses, and was a member of the Lewis County Sheriffs Mounted Patrol and the Afifi Shrine Mounted Patrol. He raced Thoroughbreds under the banner of "4-L" Stables in Washington, Oregon, and California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Glenn; and his son, Lt. Commander Roderick "Rog" Lester, an MIA Navy Pilot in the Vietnam War.
In addition to his loving wife of 63 years, Esther, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Reg and Nita Lester of Santa Rosa, California; his grandsons, Reg and Ryan Lester of San Jose, California; his sisters, Gertrude Hall of Vancouver, Washington, Yvonne Childress of Dallas, Texas, and La Jean Fife of Alder, Washington.
Funeral services were held in the Morton Elementary School Gymnasium with Pastor Kathy Cottrell of the Morton United Methodist Church, with interment to follow at the Morton Cemetery with the Morton Masonic Lodge officiating. A reception will follow the committal services at the Morton Senior Center.
